Design Engineer
Overview

Manufacturing Engineers apply knowledge of materials and engineering theory and methods to design, integrated, and improve manufacturing systems or related processes.  They may work with commercial or industrial designers to refine product designs to increase productivity and decrease costs.

They identify opportunities or implement changes to improve products or reduce costs using knowledge of fabrication processes, tooling and production equipment, assembly methods, quality control standards, or product design, materials and parts. They will review product designs for manufacturability and completeness. By incorporating new methods and processes to improve existing operations they can reduce costs and time-to-market while also producing a higher quality product.

One of the goals of a Manufacturing Engineer is to reduce setup time for each manufacturing process.  By reducing the setup time, it reduces the time and cost to produce custom products, thereby providing a competitive advantage for the company.

The majority of the Manufacturing Engineers work is completed during the Production phase of Product Development.
